10 Unexpected Ways to use Cement Tiles

July 13, 2016

To say I’m a big fan of cement tiles is an understatement. I’ve been trying to find a way to use them in my own house but I realized there are so many places you can use them it’s almost overwhelming! So today I’ve listed my 10 tips for how to incorporate these beautiful tiles into unexpected, unique places in your home.

1. Kitchen Island
The underside of kitchen islands tend to get overlooked. However, I think it’s the perfect place to make a bit of a statement without overpowering the entire kitchen. Since its a small space and only visible from one side don’t be afraid to go all in with the most colorful and intricately patterned cement tiles! A geometric pattern would work great here too.

2. Fireplace
I think when done well, mixing patterns can be very successful and add a lot more texture and interest to a room. If you already have an intricately patterned couch or rug in your living room that’s totally fine, you can still add cement tiles to your fireplace, just keep the pattern more geometric with simple, bold colors. Also, if you have an older fireplace covering it with cement tiles is a great way to make it look a lot more modern and stylish!

3. Kitchen Backsplash
Gone are the days of subway tiles and stone, cement tiles have become the newest go-to for kitchen backsplashes. I love this trend because the matte finish of the cement tiles really makes your kitchen look modern and eclectic.

4. Small Statement Wall
If you have an awkward, narrow wall in your hallway or bathroom this is a perfect place to add cement tiles. Instead of trying to hide it, play it up and make it into an accent piece!

5. Shelf
When designing, the details are really what can make a room special. Create a unique moment in your kitchen or any room in your house by lining the inside of a shelf with colorful cement tiles. It will create a lot more depth to the shelf and you won’t need to style it too much because the tiles are doing the job!

6. Mixed Media Floor
This trend is a great way to incorporate irregular shaped cement tiles and make two rooms blend seamlessly into one another. I love that this look is super unique and is guaranteed to have your guests saying WOW!

7. Laundry Room
If my laundry room looked like this I’d be washing clothes every day – just sayin’. Unfortunately my washer and dryer are in my garage, but that doesn’t stop me from day dreaming about this gorgeous cement tile floor. There’s no reason your laundry room should be boring and drab and cement tiles are a super easy way to give it a bit more life!

8. Table top
One of the reasons cement tiles are so popular is you can use them for literally anything. Placing them on a piece of furniture instead of on floors or walls is a perfect example and makes for a gorgeous accent table. This is great if you’re in a rental apartment or house but still want to incorporate cement tiles into your space!

9. Shower
Cement tiles are taking the main stage in lots of bathrooms these days, however, instead of using them on the bathroom floor (predictable!) have a little fun and use them in your shower. I don’t know anyone that doesn’t enjoy a long hot shower, but in my opinion these gorgeous patterns would make getting clean so much more enticing!

10. Stairs
Take a cue from traditional Mexican homes and add cement tiles to the front of your stairs. You can really have fun with this one and choose a bunch of different cement tile colors and patterns to alternate on each step!

LOVE THESE IDEAs! I am not sure if my tile are cement but I have some that I purchased when I lived in turkey and the only thing I can think of is a tray for the coffee table or guest bedroom. I found an old drawer and want to purchase handles or knobs. The tile is too big for the tray I have and I don’t want to or know how to trim them. I will figure something out. I don’t have enough for a backsplash or shower but I would love more ideas for them. Wish I could send a pic.

I have faux stone on my fireplace, from ceiling to floor. My house was built in 2004, I’m feeling it’s outdated. Do you have any recommendations/ ideas on what I can do. Thank you, Jenn

If you want a whole new look, the faux stone is usually pretty easy to remove and replace with tile or real stone! It just depends on your budget!

Sharing one of my favorite recipes, these spring treats are super easy and (*bonus*) don’t involve any baking!

You can whip these out last minute and customize them for any holiday or celebration. It is also a really fun afternoon activity for the littles- they are meant to look a little messy and full of color so the kids can help you decorate once the rice Krispies are cooled.

Olivia and I used some of our favorite chocolate candy to decorate- I cant wait to see how you decorate yours!

This year is a bit different for us. I am on the road and traveling for work, so we decided to celebrate earlier this week.

I love being a Mom more than anything in the world and I also love what I do. Here’s your reminder that you can do both and thrive. Sometimes... as a working parent, you need to be flexible. Just remember, it’s ok. 💛

The best Easter is one spent with your Peeps. 🐰 The best Easter is one spent with your Peeps. 🐰

Easter is less than a week away so, of course, I put together the jelly bean & peep floral centerpiece that I make almost every year. I make it every Easter and you may have already seen it on Pinterest, but the reason it’s my go-to craft is because it’s so easy.

I made this in minutes and bought the peeps and jellybeans at the dollar store, so it didn’t take much $$, either.

If you’re hosting or attending a socially-distanced Easter Brunch, this is a super cute way to celebrate or you can bring it as a host(ess) gift. OR if you’re missing out on celebrating with family this year, drop this at their doorstep for the sweetest surprise. 💛

This gloomy weather has me dreaming 💭 of spring This gloomy weather has me dreaming 💭 of spring, so I’m doing a roundup of my favorite planters!

You can refresh your living space or workspace any time of the year and benefit from adding a lush, thriving green plant and colorful ceramic or stoneware pot to your environment.

Here are some tips for decorating with planters:

1. Mix interesting or engaging containers with living plants to add a focal point. Using different sized pots and complementary colors, group three plants together. Try to make one of the three larger to break up the visual look. Everything is better in groups of three.

2. Play with heights — use hanging planters, plant stands, different size pots, etc. Create a focal point, and use the other pieces to compliment it.

3. Choose planters that bring you JOY! That’s a given, no explanation necessary. 🥰
