The Senses: Design Beyond Vision

November 12, 2018

A few weeks ago, I was able to make a quick trip to NYC (I always enjoy heading back to NYC anytime I can) because I was invited to kick off National Design Week with Delta® as they unveiled their latest conceptual design during Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum’s “The Senses: Design Beyond Vision” exhibition… which examines how design effects all of your senses: touch, smell, vision, sound and taste. As a designer, this was incredible interesting since I take every sense into account when creating a room for a client. It’s not just about what you see, I also have to take into account the way fabrics feel, the lighting and even incorporating aromatherapy in a space. The entire exhibit was so much fun and unlike any other museum experience I have ever had before! We were encouraged to experience design through interactive installations, created in collaboration with other designers. During the event, Delta also unveiled a concept faucet that was out of this world! Yes, this is a faucet!!

Even throughout the cocktail party, there were decorations and installations that were interactive. Each paper flower had different unique scent to them and the wall wheels moved when you touched them. It was truly a unique design experience!

One of my favorite parts of the night was being able to finally catch up with my old friend, Bobby Berk (you know him as the designer on Queer Eye) and meet other Design Trust members, Elsie and Emma from A Beautiful Mess (they are adorable), as well as Kate Arends from Wit and Delight and Noa Santos from Homepolish plus a few other amazing bloggers and designers. The event began with a design chat led by Delta’s Industrial Designer, Seth Fritz and Bobby Berk. They touched on how the senses effect the design process as well as well as Bobby’s takes on trends right before unveiling the conceptual faucet design. The entire night was full of inspiration and entertainment. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend stopping by for a quick peak! I only wish Olivia was with me, because an exhibition like this is meant to be experienced in every way!
